Hong Kong is accelerating its transition to green mobility with a new HK$300 million Fast Charger Incentive Scheme set to launch in mid-2025. This initiative aims to deploy 3,000 new fast charging stations across the city by 2030, addressing the growing demand for EV charging infrastructure. With over 119,000 electric vehicles (EVs) on the roads as of April 2025, accounting for 13.1% of all vehicles, the government is prioritizing Hong Kong EV infrastructure to support its carbon neutrality goal by 2050 (Transport Department, 2025).
The scheme, announced by Financial Secretary Paul Chan, offers subsidies of up to $100,000 per electric vehicle charger, with a cap of $20 million per applicant. These chargers will support approximately 160,000 additional EVs, ensuring equitable access across all 18 districts. Applicants must provide electronic payment options, real-time usage data, and public liability insurance to qualify. This move complements the existing 11,188 public EV chargers, including 2,028 quick chargers, and aligns with the target of equipping 200,000 parking spaces with charging facilities by mid-2027 (Environment and Ecology Bureau, 2025).
This investment signals a robust commitment to sustainable transport and creates opportunities for property owners and EV charging service providers to collaborate on expanding Hong Kong EV infrastructure. For EV drivers, real-time charger availability will be integrated into mobile apps like PlugShare and CLP, enhancing convenience for urban commuters. Stay tuned for updates as Hong Kong powers up its electric vehicle charging network!
