In a groundbreaking step for green mobility, Towngas and the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP) launched the city’s first hydrogen-powered EV charging station on July 25, 2025, at the Hong Kong Science Park. This innovative project uses ultra-high purity hydrogen (99.97%) from Towngas’s gas network to power fuel cells, generating clean electricity for five automated electric vehicle chargers without CO₂ emissions (Towngas, 2025).
This pilot, backed by the HKSAR Environment and Ecology Bureau, is part of 27 hydrogen-focused projects aimed at advancing Hong Kong EV infrastructure. The station showcases a scalable model for fast charging solutions, reducing reliance on traditional grid power and supporting Hong Kong’s 2050 carbon neutrality target (Environment and Ecology Bureau, 2025). The initiative highlights the potential of hydrogen as a low-emission alternative, paving the way for future EV charging innovations in the city.
As electric vehicle adoption surges, with EVs making up 70% of new private car registrations in 2025, this project positions Hong Kong as a leader in sustainable transport. Drivers can expect more hydrogen-powered charging stations to emerge, complementing the 7,112 medium chargers and 2,028 quick chargers already available. This is a bold step toward a cleaner, greener future for Hong Kong EV infrastructure!
